The patient alchemy of lead harmonizes a world where beauty of the shape and the precise cut the characters make the word visible. And so, having stood the test of the printing press, the virgin sheet of paper comes alive with the blood of words : revelation of the ultimate aim of writing. Giving life to a sparkling sense of jubilation in the eye and the touch, such is the talent of the typographer Jean-Jacques Sergent.

Gérard de Sorval

This mane likes to talk, and he likes to have the books he loves talk to others. He likes both the spoken and the written word. When a child, already moved by the smell of paper, ink and glue, he wants books as presents. Later on life, after some tribulations in the Orléans local administration, he chooses to learn, by himself, the craft of typographer.

Today, he presents with books fashioned for the pleasure of our senses. Well could he be a brother of Rabelais, with the verve, the joviality and the love of what is good in life that they share.

However, fascinated by Fulbert, bishop of Chartres in the XIth century and one the great scholars of the period, he chooses that name to attach to his; and it is therefore under that double appellation that are edited books composed by the typographer in his workshop at Cléry-Saint-André.
The Orléans multimedia library has organized a show of his production, and a quick look at the catalogue makes evident the fact that everything in Jean-Jacques Sergent's work is based on selected affinities; those of today and those of yesteryear; one comes across Apollinaire and Pic de la Mirandolle, François Rabelais and Jacques Prévert, Henry Michaux, Yves Bonnefoy, Eugène Guillevic or Eric Satie, and many others; side by side, one finds the narrative of the Passion of Christ and Taoist books, the Gospel of Saint John and texts from the early desert anchorites; leafing through the pages, one meets François Righi, Marc Pessin, Bambagioni, Eric Lefèvre, his long-time accomplices.

At the origin of everything he produces : a "coup-de-cœur" for a style, a thought, a story; everything that is in fact Jean-Jacques Sergent.
